Nunu's is the kind of place Martians might create if their goal was to fabricate a bar guaranteed to please any and every American citizen born between say, 1928 and 1978. Everything in this '60s holdover is right and even critical for the attainment of that overall cozy bar feeling -- it's just that everything is also so eerily tweaked in some undefinable fashion that you soon realize that what makes the place so delightful is that it's just plain fun being part of a Martian experiment. A distinctly carpet-like material covers the walls, and faux-leather booths the size of Hawaii compete with white Christmas lights that are inexplicably strung over the bar (where they're intertwined with, of course, plastic ivy vines). Everywhere you look, another cowboy picture or other iconic Western artifact is staring you in the face, while the black metallic fireplace makes you feel like Frank Sinatra on LSD in John Wayne's den. Wonderful! Aside from it's draw as a kitschy neighborhood dive, popular with hipsters and old-timer alike, they have a full menu serving up tasty vittles.

Insider's Tips: Last call is 1:30AM, at which point no more entries are allowed. Looking for that wake-me-up shot (or still partying from the night before)? You may find the front door locked, but the entrance off the patio is always open at 6AM.

Nunu's is one of San Diego's best. If you want to get a seat (or booth) get there before 9pm. It gets really packed between 10ish pm and after. The bar keeps are charismatic and mix a good drink. There's a patio where you can smoke and drink (I think). This bar used to be an old Portugeuse mobster hang out. Occasionally the actors from the Old Globe Theater will throw one back here too. Have fun!
