San Diego's very own House of Blues offers two pluses that it's big sister the Coors Amphitheatre (both run by the same conglomerate) can't: more intimacy and year-round shows. The national chain's power-packed promotions department manages to both pull the big names as well as showcase regional acts. As with every HOB location, a little Mississippi River mud was poured into the cement, to infuse the hospitality and musical spirit of the Deep South. But while blues and zydeco may sing to the soul of the House, count on sounds as diverse as rock, reggae, hip-hop, electronica and more to blow the doors off the place. Of course, you can also expect one Mr. Dan Aykroyd (a.k.a. Elwood Blues) to put on the occasional harmonica-huffin' show with black-hatted friends Jim Belushi and John Goodman.
Aside from the music hall, a restaurant makes HOB a strong draw for the north-of-Broadway district, the "anti-Gaslamp." Check out the downhome cooking and famed Sunday Gospel Brunch with live music that will lift up body and soul. Voodoo shrimp with rosemary cornbread or gumbo get your appetite rollin' like the Mississippi. Drift away with some smoked baby back ribs, chicken pot pie or wild mushroom risotto before sealing the deal with white chocolate banana bread pudding.
The venue doubles as an event center: The funky restaurant or the expansive music hall can be set up to accommodate your entourage, no matter how big.
