A stone's throw from the heart of Hillcrest, this culinary cornerstone serves hearty breakfasts, lunches and dinners to locals who appreciate the humongous portions and (relatively) tiny checks. Breakfast sees the biggest crowds, especially on weekends, when the wait can be up to an hour long. But for enormous dishes of salmon hash with crispy seasoned potatoes, smoked chicken and sun-dried tomato scrambles or Snickers pancakes, the wait is well worth it.

Out-of-towners are usually floored by the surfboard-sized plates, which usually sport a foot-long sprig of rosemary garnish, whether atop bone-in ribeye or penne with spinach and chili cream. Given the attention to detail and fresh ingredients, you might not realize this is gussied-up comfort food -- albeit taken to the nth degree. The warm and subdued atmosphere makes Hash House perfect for fine dining.

Seafood is a particular treat, but you could do well to merely point at an appealing dish on a neighboring table. The meatloaf is potent enough to tear die-hard vegetarians away from their tofu. Piled mesa-high, the silky mashed potatoes are so tasty it would be a crime to discuss calories. The crab cakes are similarly titanic, and are served with mashed squash as the perfect compliment. Chicken with waffles and maple syrup? It may sound strange to those unfamiliar with Roscoe's in LA, but after one bite of the dish, you'll wonder why you never thought of it before. Great wine, espresso coffees and a full bar put Hash House A-Go-Go atop the Hillcrest list. Dessert options are limited to only a few choices (including a cobbler of some variety), but it's certainly a case of quality over quantity.

  • Awesome. A Must Try

    Review rating : 5out of 5   travelfoodie - 02/23/2007

Giant portions of very good food. We started by sharing a Sage fried chicken salad. It was probably the most tender, juicy chicken I have ever tasted. The main entree was the crispy hand hammered pork tenderloin. Again, very tender. Incredible flavor. The biscuits killed us. very good, but very filling, served before the meal. Probably should have taken the biscuits home and concentrated more on the salad and entree.
We visited a number of restaurants on our trip that were highly rated. This was, by far, our favorite.

  • Disgusting

Hash house serves exactly that: Flavorless piles of too much food. Disgusting. Friends and family "a go-go" clearly stacked the votes to get on this list. Their own chef wrote the "crispy hand hammered pork tenderloin" review. Who else would know (or care) that it was "hand hammered"? Hash house is truly one of the worst examples of San Diego eateries: the portions they serve are shockingly unhealthy to say the least. Just a block west of Old Town, Perry's Cafe is the best breakfast in town, as all San Diegans have known for years. Perry's doesn't serve anything but breakfast, because they don't have to. The fact they're not even on this list is appalling...just ask any true San Diegan.

  • Only if u want to pig out ...

Portions are enough for 4 people, u feel sick before u even start eating.
Food quality is rather fatty and flavorless.
The "famous biscuits" are horrible ...
    Services is fast and friendly...

  • Holy Moley Good God!

If you are looking for a tip of toast and some tea don't go there. If you want a Breakfast that will blow you away this is it. Found it on the last day of my last visit to SD. Sadly I could not eat there again before leaving. Coffee is Great, Service is Better and the Food selection for a breakfast is mind bending. Foodies will not be disappointed. Splendid menu, nobody gets away hungry and there is something for everyone. It is a long way from the East coast but we have NOTHING that is even in the same league.

The food, the style, the ambiance, the service, the mood, the diverse crowd, the music, the movement, the attitude. It is all at the HH and you can do whatever you choose with it.
When the feeling is good and the laughter is loud and the memories are many and time is too short and food is soooooooo
good, then you know you are at the HH a GO go.floyd

  • I take EVERYONE there

    Review rating : 5out of 5   looklikeerika - 08/12/2004

Hash House leaves everyone else in the dust! I take my out-of-towners here for the very best breakfasts. The portions are insane and sooo good. I recommend the three-egg scramble with roasted chicken (nearly a whole one), fresh corn, mozzerela and I think bell pepper. Worth whatever wait there is!

The food :always a special presentation; Great tasting; and usually there is enough for a meal at home in the "brown bag" (styrofoam). Great Servers, Service and Prices.

  • Food & Service

    Review rating : 5out of 5   sawdstmkr - 03/08/2004

    The food was
    fabulous..and the
    service was outstanding!
    We did not notice that
    there was a "wait" for
    serving of our group of
    five..however, the
    restaurant felt there
    was, apologized and did
    not charge for our
    drinks and offered free
    desert..which we had to
    turn down since we were
    "stuffed" with their
    devine

I try to go to Hash House at least twice a month. They have such great service and the food is awesome. If you are ever visiting from out of town, definitely stop by Hash House!
