Step into the world of Little Italy as it was meant to be. Classic Italian cuisine is at its best in the DePhilippis family's original restaurant (from which seven other locations have sprung). To get to the dining area, you must first walk through an Italian grocery store and deli that is strewn with cheeses, pastas, wine, bottles of olive oil and salamis -- you may want to make a mental note to come back and buy a sandwich to take with you to work. The dining area itself is dark, which helps mask the age of the place. The tables are lined with red-checkered tablecloths and Chianti bottles that substitute as candleholders. Don't be shocked if you end up sitting behind shelves of canned olives; it's a tradition in the restaurant, and the aromas wafting from the kitchen can still find you. The pizza is a must, but the monstrous meatball sandwiches are also tempting, as are the piles of ravioli. Whatever you get, you better have an appetite, because each portion looks big enough to feed you for a week.

I actually like the fact that this pizza was voted #1 because while all you guys that don't know what real pizza is are waiting in lines around the block I can just walk right into bronx pizza and grab a slice without getting bamboozeled into buying a whole pie and waiting in line .

No one can beat Filippi's - there food is AWESOME and SSSOO reasonable as far as money is concerned. I'm glad people recognized real Italian food - everyone should go there and see for yourself. You will be happy you did!!!

  • Paul Says Simply The Best!!!

58 years of going to the downtown Grotto and we will continue that trend until ?? Torpedos, Pizza, you name it, always the best. Enter the front door and you are in Italy for a brief stay with all the smells wafting around the Italian cooking and the store in front with the dried Haddocks, hanging cheeses and a wide variety of fine Italian foodstuffs on shelves and in cases. The original store, kitchen and 6 boothes still are in use but the overall resturant has expanded and accomodates many today.
Filippi's will always be the best

Best pizza I have every had!

My family goes almost every Sunday for a pizza. I get my own and I'm only a size "0"..........It's that good. My husband loves to watched me eat and enjoy it so much. I do take two slices home with me. Although, I give it a good shot!

I highly recommend it to anyone who loves pizza!!!

  • Is grandma back there cooking

    Review rating : 5out of 5   countrygirlover8 - 06/29/2005

If you're lookin for high brow italian.......this isn't it. If you're lookin for great food at an even better price, look no further. For a place so well known for pizza, little has been written about their other items. The sausage and meatballs are fabulous. And the lasagna is ABSOUTELY INCREDIBLE. This from a guy whose italian grandmother couldn't speak a lick of english but could make miracles happen in the kitchen. A definite stop on any trip to San Diego. Dine really early or really really late on the weekends, a line at 9:30pm is not uncommon. As far as their pizza, if you're lookin for crappy NY pizza, go somewhere else, like Godfathers or Dominos. If you're looking for honest to goodness, epitome of great, CHICAGO pizza look no further. Finish it off with some house chianti and you'll find yourself experiencing a small bit of heaven.

I was invited to filippi's about a year ago and have been a regular customer since. I will not eat pizza if it's not filippi's.

  • Worth the drive...

    Review rating : 5out of 5   ckat313 - 06/13/2005

I grew up in San Diego and now live 3 hours away. Sometime you just have to have Filippi's. The white sauces are to die for, and everyone should try the house red. Got to love the glasses!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   mp2ocfromsd - 04/12/2005

I have been coming to this restaurant since I was in my teens, and I am in my 40's now. I have brought almost all out of town guests and business partners here at one time or another, as well as hosted staff meetings. The food and Chianti is that good.
I have seen the expansions and have seen the staff come and go. A few persons have been there for years and years. The food never changes. The pizza is great with the pepperoni being put UNDER the cheese before it goes in the oven. It gives it a distinct taste. Dont forget to order the Antipasto salad, and the sauce is incredible. Make sure you also try the lasagne, home made meatballs and the linguini with clams! It is LOADED with Garlic!
