The pop-culture icons that define America have been brought to bear in a single restaurant: the Corvette Diner. Muscle cars, hamburgers, Coca-Cola, Formica countertops, poodle skirts, rock 'n' roll, Elvis -- it's all here. No one has heard of "fusion cuisine" in this joint, and pretension of any kind is not allowed. Styled as the ultimate '50s diner with memorabilia-smothered walls, a DJ booth and wisecracking, gum-popping servers who cheerfully chuck straws at the patrons, the Corvette is considered the be-all and end-all of San Diego family restaurants. The burger-heavy menu is a true kid pleaser, with a few departures such as fish tacos and Chinese chicken salads. The soda fountain produces epic-sized malts (the Elvis, a blend of chocolate ice-cream, peanut butter and bananas, is a favorite) and sundaes -- perfect for bribing wee ones into finishing their entrees.
Live DJs and balloon artists help pass the time until food arrives, so you may want to bring some singles for tipping. The restaurant is smack in the middle of Hillcrest, so parking is understandably heinous; consider the valet lot next door. If you really want to show up in style, call and hook up one of the diner's "Limo" parties. The Corvette sends a limo to collect you and seven of your favorite friends for a gut-busting burger-basket dinner, then delivers you safely back home -- perfect for kids' parties. No reservations are taken, so drop-in diners may want to factor waiting time into their plans.

update 2004
I had'nt been to Corvette's for about 7 years but myself and 3 friends decided to do a flashback of when we used to go. The atmosphere has pretty much remained the same although if a new owner took over they could really turn the place around without losing the nostalgia.
The major disappointment was the food...way back when --gee 7 years ago...they had the best burgers, fries and even more awesome sandwiches. So I was very disappointed with the food. The portions were down sized since I'd been there last but believe me that did'nt matter since I'd rather have quality over quanity. Frozen fries that come in a white bag with blue letters(no name),wholesale bread for sandwiches and burgers...and I can only guess they wiegh precisely how much meat goes into a sandwich or making a burger. I'll grant that they have a good theme but if you're going to draw someone in the door with that prepare to back it up with good food.....even those dining in the 50's and 60's enjoyed a good meal. I had to write only because I saw how outdated these reviews were.Add CommentMelliFromCali's Review
corvetts is totally awesome if you enjoy humor. This place is good for young people or the young at heart. If youre a bitter traditional elder or young adult i dont recommend you go there. but to all of those like me that enjoy being in good company and atmosphere go to corvetts. Itll be an experience you wont forget.

Reminded me of Ed Debevics in Chicago for atmosphere... but Ed's food was WAY better. The burgers here were terrible, the cheese fries were cold, the parking was impossible, and the shakes looked better than they tasted. Fun for kids but eat before you come and just order something basic like a root beer float. Disappointing.

We received a gift certificate to eat here. I would never go back. The food was lousy.. cold burger, cold cheese, cold fries, terrible service. I'm just thankful it was paid for. It definitely is not worth all the hype!!!

I loved the Corvette Diner. The food is great and the atmosphere is wonderful. As for Gerald's complaint, I wouldn't take anything seriously from a person claiming to be 54 and can't even write correct English. How can he say that the food is better somewhere else when he stated that he was thrown out before eating. One thing is true, expect the waitresses to be "different". Great place to take kids, they think it's fun!

A fine place if you're not easily offended like the previous poster. Personally, I enjoy unpretentious places where you could do something like that. Throwing straws in someone's face is okay, but throwing utensils is dangerous. That person deserved to be thrown out if you ask me!
