The pop-culture icons that define America have been brought to bear in a single restaurant: the Corvette Diner. Muscle cars, hamburgers, Coca-Cola, Formica countertops, poodle skirts, rock 'n' roll, Elvis -- it's all here. No one has heard of "fusion cuisine" in this joint, and pretension of any kind is not allowed. Styled as the ultimate '50s diner with memorabilia-smothered walls, a DJ booth and wisecracking, gum-popping servers who cheerfully chuck straws at the patrons, the Corvette is considered the be-all and end-all of San Diego family restaurants. The burger-heavy menu is a true kid pleaser, with a few departures such as fish tacos and Chinese chicken salads. The soda fountain produces epic-sized malts (the Elvis, a blend of chocolate ice-cream, peanut butter and bananas, is a favorite) and sundaes -- perfect for bribing wee ones into finishing their entrees.
Live DJs and balloon artists help pass the time until food arrives, so you may want to bring some singles for tipping. The restaurant is smack in the middle of Hillcrest, so parking is understandably heinous; consider the valet lot next door. If you really want to show up in style, call and hook up one of the diner's "Limo" parties. The Corvette sends a limo to collect you and seven of your favorite friends for a gut-busting burger-basket dinner, then delivers you safely back home -- perfect for kids' parties. No reservations are taken, so drop-in diners may want to factor waiting time into their plans.

50's fun
its not somewhere you would go for a gourmet meal, but it is a fun family outting. It's your typical diner, with all the decor. Try the burger w peanut butter....its unusually good! the kids had fun and it was a reasonable change

I loved the theme of the restaurant, the food was great--- HOWEVER, I was completely appalled by the lack of cleanliness. There were flies on the toppings at the counter where they make their milkshakes and fountain drinks. I even saw a waitress stick her hand in the sprinkles jar (which had a little spoon) to add sprinkles to a sundae: WITHOUT WASHING HER HANDS BEFORE OR AFTER. The amount of flies in that plays was so surprising. I didn't know if it was because of the summer heat or because they kept their doors open (which they didn't). Either way, they should have made a more sincere effort in covering the foods or ingredients. I am never eating there again.
Vette is Fun

Some people get it, and some people don't. The Corvette Diner isn't fine dining, it's fun dining. I love the joint. I grew up in San Diego and much of the signage and pictures at the Corvette Dinar are authentic San Diego history. If you truly want a blast from the past, good food, sassy staff and fabulous hits of the '50s and '60s this place is for you. And for those that don't get it - You're L7, loosen up.
FUN PLACE BUT LOUSY FOOD
I recently took my 5 year old twins and their sister for the twins' 5th birthday. Soon after sitting down, the waitress throws a handfull of straws on the table! A fun tradition. She then wrapped the twins' long hair up in big red straws, a tradition for birthday girls. The twins loved it! After dinner, the twins were treated to a bowl of ice cream and a birthday song from the wait staff. The DJ came on at 6pm and was happy to take requests for 50s, 60s, or early 70s music and one can request a dance number by all the wait staff which we really enjoyed. There was also a magician to entertain with some great magic for the kids. Unfortunately, the food is way below average and too expensive for the poor quality. Also, the parking in the lot next door was $5.00 per car! So you might want to look for a cheaper lot in the area. Overall, a fun night but don't expect good food.
Fun and Good Food
Looks like someone read the comments below and took notice. We found the service to be quick and the wait staff were very attentive and catered to food requests not on the menu. The food was good and just short of excellent . Almost every table seemed to have a birthday going on - we brought our 1 year old and he had a blast just watching all the entertainment going on. Loud inside. Great milkshakes.
Fun, but overrated
The 50's diner atmosphere is great if you're looking for something out of the ordinary. However, the burgers are overrated. You'll start by being seated and then while you wait for your waitress, you have a handful of straws or napkins thrown in the air landing all over your table... It lightens people up and puts a smile on their face, but the fun pretty much ends there. I think they're probably under-staffed because the waitresses also provide entertainment which leaves the diners hungry while they sing and dance. When you finally get your food, it's not nearly as good as you heard. The service is average, but could be so much better if they weren't tired from singing and dancing in costume...
atmosphere great, but...
great place for family entertainment but i thought the food was downright lousy...maybe i ordered the wrong thing, i dunno...but willing to try again...certainly i think they can do a better job with the food...
