Probably the most hushed local hang in Newport, Blackie's is adamant about keeping tourists out, never advertising or offering cheesy drink specials designed to trap the non-hip passerby. The place has existed for over fifty years by sheer word of mouth -- rumor has it that John Wayne used to throw down beers here during the '40s and '50s. The mildewed regulars mostly wet their whistles on draft beer while their sobriety slips away beneath loud dramatic conversation, and the sunset goes unnoticed over their shoulders, as if the bar-front weren't glass at all.
