At Uncle Bill's, the faithful South Bay crowd has come to appreciate both Frisbee and silver dollar-sized pancakes to go with their fluffy French toast and veggie-harboring omelets. Loyalists treasure the banana nut and blueberry pancakes, served 'Alice'-style with good grace and attitude, but if you're feeling adventurous, the cheddar bacon waffle deserves a go, even though it should come with health insurance.

For lunch, Uncle Bill has burgers, sandwiches and salads for those who like cheap fixes. With indoor booths and a college-lined notepad waiting list, expect to wait five to 30 minutes on Highland Avenue on weekends. If you snag a comfy sidewalk chair, though, watching fit sunbathers stroll by just might make you think twice about getting stuffed. With its straight-on view of the Pacific, consider the outdoor patio, which provides a perfect distraction from any meaningful conversation. And if you've ever wondered who all those pictures lining the interior walls were of, the answer is: loyal customers, who (besides being a bit snap-happy with the camera) love immersing themselves in cheap breakfasts carried out by Uncle Bill who, in turn, has immortalized their faces as wallpaper. -- Gregg Rosenzweig

  • tasty but you have to wait

    Review rating : 4out of 5   CAEAGLE1 - 07/04/2008

Food is great but you always have to wait. And parking in M.B. is not very good. The Kettle on M.B. has great food and faster service. Best breakfast is at Jinky's Cafe in Sherman Oaks, Santa Monica, Hollywod. Food is great, more then one can eat and and breakfast is served all day.

While this isn't bad, the Pantry is the best.

Food & service both very good .... reasonable cost.

Bill's got it all over IHOP ... rather dip my thingy into lava than eat at IHOP.

  • "Flappy Jack's" Is Superior!

    Review rating : 3out of 5   sfspforever - 03/04/2007

Sorry AOL, once again you missed the boat, big time! "Flappy Jack's, located on old Route 66 in the City of Glendora should have been on the list of top 10. " Uncle Bill's has good food, but not up to par with "Flappy's."

  • i WORKED HERE DECADES AGO!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   benjustice - 09/26/2006

As a teenager, I was one of the original dishwashers and busboys when Uncle Bill's opened in the early 1960s. It was always a great breakfast place. But I'm surprised you haven't discovered La Conversation, the charming corner cafe in West Hollywood at 638 N. Doheny Drive, one block north of Santa Monica Blvd., on the edge of Beverly Hills. Great breakfasts, fantastic pastries (some served complimentary in a basket with your breakfast), legendary oatmeal, and coffee that puts Starbucks to shame. Service is a bit slow, so it's for the leisurely diner. Local and celebrities mix casually at this friendly place. Check it out!

If you want good pancakes.. go to The Griddle Cafe in Hollywood. You get way more bang for your buck.
