It's all about the slippery shrimp at Yang Chow. Customers flood the place specifically to gobble up the signature dish of lightly breaded shrimps with an orange, sweet and slightly spicy taste. Dry, sauteed green beans with minced pork are another house specialty, and Yang Chow is also highly regarded for pan-fried dumplings, moo shu and spicy won-tons filled with pork. The menu of Mandarin and Szechwan-derived items is diverse and includes all the Chinese standbys: pan-fried noodles, fried rice, all kinds of beef, chicken, pork and veggie items. There's also a wide selection of seafood items including Kung Pao fresh Conch, jellyfish, sauteed clams, lemon scallops and stewed sea cucumber with shrimp eggs. And unlike a lot of Chinese restaurants where you have to go on a heat-seeking mission to find a morsel of meat or shellfish piled under veggies and garnish, at Yang Chow, you'll never have to take out your magnifying glass to find a shrimp again. -- Lydia Marcus

  • Yang Chow

I have been going to Yang Chow for about 7 years and have NEVER been disappointed. The service is great on white table cloths and the food....from the minute you park the car (also the valet is amazing, knows your car every time, even first timers, love this extra service) the delicious aromas play with your nose and make your mouth water. It's worth the trip and perfect place to go before seeing something at the Music Center. Go early, relax and enjoy, I know you will.

Went here for BDay dinner, suggested by friend, and I still love her. This place is way overrated. Its average, waiters are great however, food comes very fast, but its average

  • LA's Best Chinese Restaurant - Yang Chow

    Review rating : 5out of 5   MKByrd - 06/09/2008

I've been eating at Yang Chow for over 15 years and I've never found a restaurant that serves better soups, steamed dumplings or pan fried noodles. Then of course there is Slippery Shrimp! 95% of customers order this dish - there must be a reason. The employees are wonderful - including William and the owners. I moved to North Carolina however, every time I'm in Los Angeles - or Pasadena - we always go to Yang Chow!!! If there is a better Chinese restaurant - I've not found it.

  • Fair but not so good.

There is a reason why you don't see many Chinese customer in Yang Chow. If you like American style Chinese food, Yang Chow is good enough. But If you like real good Chinese food in Los Angeles Chinatown, next time walk a few steps north to Hop Woo (845 N. Broadway). Try this: Peking Duck (half) (limited availability), Moo Shu Beef, Pan Fried Shrimp w/ Walnut in special sauce, Spicy Hot Eggplant or Hot Braised String Bean w/minced meat. Don't order any soup if you are not very experienced in Chinese soup, but ask for steam rice and tea to go with the food. Dinner for 4 for about $50. Cash only no credid card. Coupons available on www.hopwoo.com.

  • good service

    Review rating : 5out of 5   queiti - 04/19/2006

we have been going to yang chow for years. we have never been treated rudely, ever. yes, sometimes the hostesses can be short, but i have never seen them treat anyone the way a previous reviewer claims to have been treated. william has always been friendly and helpful. it wouldn't surprise me if there was quite a bit of exaggeration. go to yang chow and enjoy the food. don't expect overly friendly american service, because they are chinese, not american. but they do chinese food right. the lines out the door of all races will tell you that!
