Hugo's looks like a chic butcher shop where Hollywood heavyweights hang out, especially over breakfast: eggs scrambled with prosciutto, bacon and scallions; and Pasta Mama, a hearty jumble of fresh pasta and Parmesan-laden scrambled eggs. The lunch menu is composed of exotic and traditional antipasti, salads, pastas and veal dishes. We love the sandwich with hot sausages and sweet roast peppers, the pasta vercelli, with tomato, capers, basil and anchovies, and the chicken marsala with piquant sun-dried tomatoes.

  • Crawling bugs

On my salad was a crawling bug, I ordered the cuban sandwich. Not only that, the staff member took my plate and brought me the same order again (a new sandwich and salad) I dont want to argue so as I am about to try my food, he takes it back!! The manager comes over and does not apologize about the bugs or bad service , she states "well, that happens with organic food quite a bit". Also my friend who orders out there several times a week complains that there is meat/sour cream etc in her VEGAN meal. The manager then blames the "south american cooks" since they are confused as to what "vegan" food is.

I left there hungry and they still charged us 12 bucks for our drink and small cup of soup. I should have raised hell!!

Hugos is the best. I can go there with my very young son, my tween niece, hipsters and grandmas and everyone is happy. Breakfast is fantastic. They have unique and delicious egg dishes. Their cinnamon swirl french toast is amazing. Their specials are consistantly excellent. And it's healthy! The service is always good and Jasmine the hostess is a treasure.

  • Great Breakfast

    Review rating : 5out of 5   strictd102 - 09/03/2006

Breakfast at Hugo's is great.... always ... over the last year I have found the service good ... several have said it pricy .. but I think it is fairly priced for the mix of ingredients, quality, and quantity.

pssst... I like the waiter telling us all about his latest audition.

  • Highs and lows

    Review rating : 2out of 5   avidadali - 01/03/2006

Over the years I've had good meals here (Pasta Mama), and they have a nice selection of tea (oh, and who's the idiot who said the place is vegetarian? Not true, never has been). Service can be okay. But then there's the drawbacks -- overcrowded, overpriced, and no longer the only game in town for the breakfast crowd. And then Hugo's in the valley had the gall to open Hugo's Tacos, which is possibly the worst taco stand in all of Los Angeles -- I can get a better burrito in the frozen food section of Ralph's for a buck, that's how bad it is. Disgusting food, insultingly overpriced, and you're sitting under a freeway overpass to eat it. Literally took a few bites then threw it out and went to Poquito Mas to wash the taste out of my mouth. For all Hugo's nattering about healthy, fresh food, they don't deliver the goods reliably. And at these prices, it's inexcusable.

I didn't like the food at all. None of us at my table did.

I live in Chicago and REALLY miss this restaurant. I recommend it to everyone I know who will be visiting LA. Why? Two words: Pasta Mama.
This is the best breakfast place I know of!

This restaurant always has consistently had excellent cuisine. It is my favorite place for breakfast in Los Angeles. One of my favorite dishes is Pasta Mama
