Perennial Los Feliz lounge keeps 50's supper-club glamour alive for a faithful hipster crowd.
Yes, the Dresden Restaurant is famous for movies like Swingers, That Thing You Do with Tom Hanks and a host of others that have chosen it for location shoots. It's been around since 1964 and still carries itself with that air of the 60s. At the bar, blue glasses are seen before patrons as they sip the house classic Blood and Sand--a space age margarita--and of course the ubiquitous martinis and Manhattans. Glasses of wine are popular, but the best choice is a bottle from the Dresden's 33-bin wine list. There is only standing room late at night, but there's never with a cover charge. It is the Hollywood place to be and be seen. It's not a super expensive place like Perino's or Chasen's were, but more like the famous Brown Derby. First rate, yet affordable for the average person.

In Short
Built in 1964, this Los Feliz institution was going strong long before it was immortalized in "Swingers" (and gave Vince Vaughn a career). The grand dining room is a kitschy wonder of high ceilings, white booths, bright-orange accents, faux Asian screens and an Italian-leaning steakhouse menu. But through the arched walls is where the real action is: Walls made of rock, gold metal-encased pendant lamps and sienna leather booths set the scene for Marty and Elayne, a black-clad duo who take on everything from Captain and Tennille to the Bee Gees. They're probably older than your grandparents (and most likely way cooler than you are) and they've owned this room since 1982, making a stop here a veritable commandment in the bible of hip. Consider this place the last vestige of swank dining and cocktail consumption in the tradition of Perino's and Coconut Grove. It's easy to dismiss Marty and Elayne as kitsch, but they're also capable jazz singers, with an occasional talent for reinventing pop fluff into pure magic stuff.

When to Go
Marty and Elayne also host--and accompany--an open mic every Tuesday, with vocal talent ranging from quality amateurs to poor imitators.
Parking
If there's no street parking, pull into the alley behind the club and valet for $3.50.
The Extras
A full menu of old-school steakhouse fare with an Italian emphasis is available.
Know Before You Go
Marty and Elayne perform Monday through Saturday from 9pm to 1am. There's never a cover, but the bar occasionally enforces a two-drink minimum if it's packed.

The place!
I moved out here a little over a year ago. I've been a regular ever since. The movie Swingers made me want to check this place out, but it just happens to be a good bar to hang out at. The beer prices are about average as far as the rest of the bars go in LA and the music is very entertaining. Unlike what the reviewer of Marty and Elayne said, they are VERY talented. This place has a great atmosphere and when the band is taking a break its very easy to hear the people you are talking to. This place rules. The waiting staff and bartenders are all really great. Overall, this place is fantastic.
