According to the well-publicized restaurant lore, this original Long Beach restaurant and the other non-LA locations it has spawned were named after Lucille Buchanan, a sassy lady who brought her granny's barbecue recipe all the way from the unnamed Southern backwoods where she grew up. A mix of lore and family-oriented dining make for strange bedfellows: The restaurant prominently features flying pigs in aviator wear, paintings of bucolic scenes of pre-World War II black South, and a display smoker which proclaims, "Tru Bar-B-Que cain't use no trickery, jus' sweet smoke from apple & hickory."

Questionable dcor aside, the barbecue is the best you're likely to find in Long Beach. And with a bar and two floors of seating, Lucille's provides for a better dining experience than your average cramped BBQ joint. There are also plenty of booths, so you won't have to worry about bringing along the whole family. And note for the holidays: if you don't feel like channeling your inner grill master, Lucille's caters.

It is a very good BBQ place, but you can never walk in and sit down....always very busy. I guess thats a good thing. :) Food is great and the service is too at all the locations I've been.

  • Best BBQ in LA

Haven't found a better place for bbq in LA! Even though it's a chain, quality is consistent and very, very good. Portions are large and price is reasonable. Excellent value.

  • OHH MY GOD!! I mean like, WOW!

I saw Lucille's was ranked number 1 on the list for places to eat around L.A. Me and my co-worker planned to eat there like two weeks before we went...When we got there it was everything that we had imagined it would be. I mean everything on the menu is god, I don't know why it is not ranked number 1 on here.

If you go to that Baby blue place and compare it to Lucille's there is no comparison..thats like comparing Kobe to everyone else in the NBA, there is no competition...I would suggest you take your family or go alone, or tell someone..because from the pulled pork, the Biscuits with apple butter, to the greens, to the baby backs...it's all good. Plus it's a full bar...that mean you can get full while you getting full!! Go, GO, GO...NOW...LUCILLE'S!!!

  • Worth a Visit....

    Review rating : 4out of 5   sfspforever - 03/01/2007

Regardless of the selection one chooses to order, the portions seem very, very generous. The food, as to be expected, factors the south/southwest flavour (see website for menu selections). "Lucille's" is very family oriented as well as a "fun" place for "youngsters" on dates. In short, it should provide a positive experience with good food, friendly and professional service and a nice (albeit, somewhat noisy) atmosphere. Be prepared, you'll probably be bringing some of the left-overs home for "Rover" almost every time you visit. Oh, by the way, did I mention it's not too expensive?
