Blue Plate Special: The name says it all: distinctive wood-fired pizza with exotic toppings.

The Dish: The cornerstone of Sam Ladeki's fleet of restaurants, Sammy's is the only one that's expanded past the San Diego area. Not an ordinary pizza joint, it's a gourmet restaurant that happens to serve killer pizza. What started with a single location in La Jolla has become a fast-growing micro-chain, enticing folks through the doors with promises of smoke-imbued pizzas and exotic toppings such as Jamaican jerk shrimp and smoked duck sausage. Entrees include prime beef, seafood and pasta with Asian influences. For dessert, try the sinfully satisfying crispy caramel apple sundae. Sammy's is a step up from pie-centered family restaurants and mass-production pizza parlors.

The Atmosphere: Saltillo tile floors, warm woods and greenery make for a cozy atmosphere nice enough for a first date or family birthdays (but not so swanky that you'll wish you'd hired a sitter). Sammy's is kid-friendly but still manages to maintain enough cachet to please the adults.

*Price Per Person includes entree, drink and dessert.

The salads are great as is the Roasted Chicken. Good for kids too (Mac and Cheese for kids is made with real cheese from scratch, not garbage from a box). However, the pizza is horrible. Tastes like Wonder Bread with Ragu sauce and rubber. Don't know how people order this stuff.

Forget the pizza, although the 5 cheese is great. Try the grilled chicken salad, simple yet very delious!

The Pizza dough was just perfect. The wood fired ovens make the crust crispy yet soft. The topping selection is wonderful. They also have entrees like salmon and lamb as well as some very interesting sounding pastas.

Pizza was excellent, service was disgusting. The waiter actually picked up a our napkin that had fallen to the ground and gave it to us when we requested a napkin! We couldn't believe it. The forks and plates were dirty too. And the wait was long. We complained after our meal to the manager and she seemed distracted and said she would talk to the waiter. We emphasized she should talk to ALL the waiters to emphasize sanitation as it looks like they haven't been instructed properly.
