David Wilhelm's Chat Noir (pronounced "shaht-nwar") brings the combination of a sophisticated Parisian bistro, jazz lounge, pre- and post-dinner theater spot and late night acid jazz club to draw an eclectic and upper class South Coast Metro theater district crowd. Both the food and the decor are designed to evoke a casual Parisian brasserie feel, with warm red tones, sophisticated black accents, oversized leather booths, displayed wine cellars, cozy dining corners and fireplace. The tres California trendy and European-style exhibition kitchen adds verve to the otherwise mellow ambience. Parisians can still light up that apres-dinner Gauloise in their corner bistro, but California's smoking ban makes a covered patio with covered banquettes a SoCal necessity. Traditional French casual fare is served such as steak frites, mussels, crepes and French onion soup. For OC's jet set, there's also a more luxe menu of foie gras, caviar and delicate souffles.

While the decor and food are more traditional, the Chat Noir's entertainment is more diverse. Wilhelm envisions his jazz lounge as a place to enjoy an apres-theatre cocktail or light supper in a spot reminiscent of Paris' le jazz hot age of the '20s. As baby boomers go home, Gen-Xers arrive in BMWs to casually hang out to a DJ playing the latest acid jazz and Verve remixes. If you love to live it up on the most special nights of the year, ask about the Chat's New Year's Eve dinner, as well as other go-all-out events.

  • Nice Atmosphere

    Review rating : 4out of 5   blondgrrl863 - 06/16/2004

I was impressed with Chat Noir. The decor is unusual and elegant for an OC spot. It looks like something you might find in LA because of how unique it is. The food was great. The service was great. When we told them we had tickets for SCR, the put a rush on our food (without us really asking) and we made it in plenty of time to get to the show.

  • Going Down Hill FAST

    Review rating : 3out of 5   noserestaurants - 05/28/2004

It is really sad that this place has turned into a pretty ugly scene. The ladies room is like a scene from the movie
SCARFACE. Real sad. The food has gone downhill and the servers are getting rude and less profesional. Sucess spoiled them I guess.

  • Bon NO Appetite- So Distasteful!

    Review rating : 0out of 5   dihoang - 05/12/2004

This restaurant has lousy service, terrible food, and an overpriced menu. The oysters on the half shell was a joke. I have never seen such a tiny shell containing a slab of dirt. There is no such word as "quality" at Chat Noir. The waitress was unaccommodating to our dissatisfaction of the food. I left the restaurant feeling cheated and unfulfilled.

  • DisneyWorld for Adults

    Review rating : 1out of 5   eileen975 - 04/25/2004

This theme restaurant that supposedly represents a french restaurant is like going
    to what is supposed to
    be a french restauant in
Disneyworld. It's a real embarrassment. The
    service does not exist
and the food is unimaginative and nuked
    how french is that...
    for the unsophisticated
sucker who wants to think they are dining
    in a french restaurant
    this is the place.

  • Broke and humiliated customer

    Review rating : 0out of 5   tooshieboy - 02/12/2004

Smoke and Mirrors, Smoke and Mirrors, Smoke and Mirrors!! Red velvet and " Brown Derby " booths can only go so far when your arrogant and overpriced. This place will follow the road of Planet Hollywood and all the other eateries without a soul in the South Coast area. I especially enjoyed the $15 water and the mandatory $5 valet fee. Goodbye Chat Noir! auv Voir!!!

  • Pass on the Croque Misseurr

    Review rating : 2out of 5   pattyer1 - 02/05/2004

At my one and only visit to this establishment, I ordered the croque misseur (spelling?) sandwich, which was served on soggy French Toast. Not my idea of a good sandwich.

  • Finally, in OC .. a Real Restaurant Open Late

    Review rating : 5out of 5   jmmushkin - 01/15/2004

David Wilhelm has accomplished a lot in his career, but this restaurant represents the achievement upon which his contribution to the culinary arts, at least to date, will be judged. And that judgement will be resoundingly positive as this is a dazzlingly well conceived and fully realized venture. The food is superb and the waiters are that rarest breed of skilled AND entertaining professionals. What makes this place great, though, is the simple fact that Mr. Wilhelm understands that urban adults want to dine AFTER theatre, not before (or at least have the option), and he has decided to keep his new restaurant open to serve the hundreds and even thousands of potential theatre-going clients that the other South Coast area restaurants stupidly ignore. Bravo. Well don.

This is a sister to the French 75 in Laguna Beach and can boast the same excellent attention to detail and attentive service. The service personnel know their menus and specialties and provide friendly warmth without being stuffy. Menus are only slightly diferent but the new facility offers a bit wider selection of traditional American dishes. I could not be more pleased to have another fine restaurant in our area.
