Blue Plate Special: Huge portions of All-American favorites: barbecued ribs, steak and rotisserie chicken. Wood-fired pizzas, pot pies. More than 400 beverages in the saloon.

The Dish: With its "bigger is better" mentality, Western motif and meaty menu, this chain seems like something straight out of the Lone Star State, but it actually started in California in the late '70s. The extensive menu offers everything from wood-fired pizza to barbecued ribs to pot pies to steak, all in huge portions and usually accompanied by a hefty serving of 'taters. Old-fashioned desserts such as Jumper's mud pie and the six-layer Chocolate Motherlode Cake finish the meal off in spectacular gut-busting style. Over in the saloon, more than 400 potables are in stock.

The Atmosphere: Although these restaurants are roomy, they tend to get crowded beyond belief during peak times -- evidence that even on the health-conscious Left Coast, steak still reigns supreme. The ambience is fun, often bordering on frantic, and family-friendly. Adults can hide out in the bar area, but because of the overflow of people waiting for tables, it can be hard to find a seat. -- Lena Katz

  • The food is excellent...

Oh, I love ordering their food because it's so good. I can order a plate for a relatively reasonable price and get my money's worth 'cause I become full. They have a pretty good salad bar there as well too and I like what they serve overall.

  • Quality and portion size

    Review rating : 1out of 5   tderenthal - 01/30/2007

The quality of the food as well as the portion sizes have decreased. The prices for all menu items have slowly increased.
So cheaper meat, fish, pasta, produce, dressings etc combined with smaller portions and increased menu prices equals a raw deal. Since 1/2006 when the original owner Craig Nicoloff entered into a merger with LLC leonard Green and Assc. The once great Claim Jumper concept has gone the way of Ford/=Volvo/Jaguar and Chrysler=Mercedes Benz.. Some names we all new at one time were excellent but have fallen when purchased by inferior companys. Water seeks it's own level and rarely rises. The original family has been ousted.
Leonard Green LLC is an investment company. No Knowledge of food. Just profits and expansion.
I have been the food industry for 27years. CJ was a favorite. I am now afraid to eat there because the last three times I have taken family there I have had to use the toilet before leaving. The last time I ordered a salad bar and steak dinner. The time time before was the Seabass.

I don't think that most would agree that claim jumper is skimpy with their portions, because most people walk out with a brown bag. The prices are reasonable and you get two meals for one price. The food is really good, I always get the black tie chicken, but their sandwiches are also great. I highly recommend any claim jumper.
