Some restaurants serve $40 burgers, fashioned from kobe beef and stuffed with truffles. But sometimes, such trendy takes on the American classic just won't satisfy a burger craving. That's where Hamburger Hamlet steps in -- the LA-based chainlet has been serving good ol' ground chuck burgers with basic toppings since 1950.

Burgers come with fries or coleslaw and in varieties like "the great slam-dunker," with sauteed onions, peppers, swiss cheese and barbecue sauce. The "some like it hot" is topped with grilled onions, jalapenos and pico de gallo. The burgers share space on the menu with alternatives like garlic chicken linguini, crab cakes, roasted chicken and fish and chips. Lighter appetites will find salads that range from Chinese chicken to turkey pasta. Appetizers include fried zucchini circles with apricot sauce, barbecued chicken quesadilla and onion soup fondue.
