I've eaten there several times. The wait staff is very nice and the food selection is good and price-wise reasonable; a lot of food for what you pay. The beer selection is excellent and the calamari and shrimp is EXCELLENT
Underwhelmed
How this restaurant is on DC's top eateries lists year after year is beyond me. I've ate there twice now and was disappointed with the quality of service (several of waitstaff and the hostesses had all the warmth and charm of a door knob). When you pay good money to eat out, you deserve excellent service. Secondly, the food and drinks were average or below average, absolutely nothing spectacular given the prices.
Not a bargain, but excellent
My husband and I had a lovely meal at CG's last weekend, on our way to theater. I had a great shrimp and grits dish and was delighted with it. It was as good as anything I've had in high-end Southern restaurants in Savannah and elsewhere. The atomosphere is busy, but we had a booth and enjoyed an intimate meal. The service was outstanding and the martini not bad either. While the prices aren't cheap, they are not stratospheric nor are they out of line for being in downtown DC.
Overpriced and Under the top
My husband and I slipped in to CG's one evening. All I wanted was a good burger ( which they were supposed to have) and a cool drink. We began with the calamari which was fine , it was wayyyyyyyyyyyyy overpriced ( OLD EBBIT has it for around $9 and it is devine. Then, our waiter whom NEVER said his name took our order. The burger came and it was GREASY!!!!.. I had to ask for lettuce.... a burger with no lettuce? So, I had a tiny greasy burger...............
The no name server sucked..... he never refilled my glass with water. Never asked how things were during the meal. At the end, when he was handed us the bill he as asked how everything "was" ? We told him " IT SUCKED".......
Pardon me, but he laughed , took our credit card and went on with his CHEF GEOFF business.
Well, that was the first and last time for them.. Seriously, next time I will wait at the EBBIT.......
