There's something to be said about a fast-food joint with real character. And although that statement may seem like an oxymoron, Jack's Old Fashion Hamburger House is living proof that such a place exists. A Fort Lauderdale fixture since 1972, Jack's is known for fresh-ground, hand-shaped burgers. The beef is charbroiled, not in the 'have it your way' fashion, but rather in the backyard barbecue way. If you've got a hankering for a third- or half-pound hunk of meat, Jack's is the place to go. Grammar freaks may have a beef with Jack's altering of the term 'old-fashioned,' but everything about this place is about old fashion: the oldies music playing on the sound system, the friendly and quick (but not harried) service and the vintage photos decorating the walls. -- Lesley Abravanel
