This legendary drive-in is a 20-minute drive from downtown Seattle, but well-worth the time for true burger fans.

The Scene
As the last remaining outpost of this beloved '50s-era chain, XXX almost feels like sacred ground--or at least a treasure-filled time capsule. A vintage muscle-car theme runs through every aspect of the decor, from the antique-glass nitrous dispensers lining the classic Coke machine to the touches of chrome and hundreds of auto photos decorating the bright, bustling dining room. Servers are consistently good-natured and helpful, but can get overwhelmed by the crowds.

The Food
All that nostalgic charm wouldn't matter if the grill fell short, but the burgers are uncommonly tasty. Liberally seasoned charbroiled patties are served on sturdy toasted buns and embellished with flawless accompaniments: thick, peppery bacon; smoky, piquant "special sauce"; savory sauteed mushrooms, and even generous slices of ham. Fries and onion rings are crispy, golden perfection and the hand-dipped shakes are divine (and their mammoth size definitely dictates sharing).

the prices were higher than most burger joints. when i went to pay the bill discovered that they only take cash - savings goes to the business becasue otherwise they pay fees on credit/debit transactions. so, on top of high prices, i had to pay a $2.00 fee at the atm convienently located in their lobby.

There's no better place to spend a spring, summer or fall weekend afternoon. There are always a lot of hot rods & customs parked in the lot and inside you'll find a varied menu and a great attitude. Kids get special treatment and are often given little gifts. The burgers are really huge and really messy (one is plenty for two people) but I always order the tuna sandwich. This is not an American Grafitti wannabe joint, this is the real thing.

  • Fun Vintage Auto Surroundings, but Bigger aint always Better

    Review rating : 3out of 5   BADTWEED - 06/13/2008

I liked the auto motif and the old school surroundings. The food was ok but it seems that the approach is to take mediocre food and make it seem better by giving you oversized portions of it. The over healthy dose of cheese on the burgers grossed me out as it had the texture of gooey Velvetta processed cheese. My shake was enormous and the fries were pretty tasty.
If you like big portions of just ok food, and 50's & 60s auto culture mixed with the predictable unenthusiastic service provided by teens then this joint deserves at least one visit. If I were driving by that neighborhood again I might just give them a second chance. They do have a rather extensive menu of items so perhaps I'll try something else the next time.
