You might have known this little space on North Broadway as Brinkley's, or perhaps you better remember it as Brass Ring, or maybe even Benjamin Briggs. If you've lived here long enough, chances are you might even remember it as the former digs of John Hawk's Pub. But in July 2003, owners Eli and Dianna Freckmann, opened a something that nobody in Milwaukee has seen before; a smoke-free pub and grill. The first of its kind in the city, Ardor's not only a quiet place to sip a pint, but a choice spot to grab a hearty lunch or dinner. Featuring 100% percent black Angus burgers, veggie burgers, wraps, homemade cornbread and pulled pork, the menu is expanding into more upscale fare. In true Wisconsin fashion, Ardor offers a fish fry that includes cod, walleye and even bluegill. The space set below the sidewalk has been brightened with the removal of the dark windows that used to face the street. Warm and inviting, the Freckman's have managed to keep the cozy pub feel that makes Ardor so special. -- Rachael Liska
