With a North Shore history dating back to the late 1930s, Hackney's has grown to six restaurants, all known for the hefty Hackneyburger. One-half pound of oval-shaped beef, sporting a crusty exterior, is situated upon fresh rye bread and served with fries, slaw and raw or grilled onions. Utensils may be in order to sufficiently consume this ode to an American classic. Many choose a side of the signature french-fried onion rings that are served in a hot, crispy loaf. Not in the ''moo'' for a burger? There are daily specials such as hot turkey served with rich mashed spuds, stuffed chicken, comfort-inducing potpie and fried walleye and lake perch. Serving so many burgers (about five tons of beef per week) to countless numbers of diners over the years means fairly streamlined, prompt service. Hackney's on Harms features a cheery outdoor patio under soaring poplar trees for warm weather dining. -- Jacky Runice

I used to go when I first moved down from Milwaukee. Lately I went back for their burger and onion rings and I noticed that the onions are sooooo greasy. I haven't been back and don't plan to go back.

  • They don't make them like this anymore

We love love love this place. It's like a little country place in the middle of the burbs. Usually get a burger on dark rye but also think reuben might be best around. Patio is beautiful. Those trees must older than the restaurant.

  • No other like it!

Just went the other night and had wonderful service and delicious food. Sitting on their patio under the stars - nothing compares! Definitely will be back.

  • Good, but not great

Hackney's is to burgers what Olive Garden is to pasta. If you're looking for a good meal Hackney's will suffice, but it's not unique enough to be spectacular. The best burgers, and any other kind of sandwich for that matter, require unique ingredients/toppings to be the best. Hackney's is not adventurous enough for the "Best in Town" title, but it is a place worth going to.
