On the fringes of the Hyde Park neighborhood, one of the most charismatic and eclectic areas of town, sits the Starlite Cafe, a funky little romantic hot spot with a unique and interesting menu that changes every day. It offers a full bar with such cocktail-menu specialties as blood orange cosmopolitans and wasabi bloody Marys. Meanwhile, the red snapper and Starlite chicken sandwich keep people coming back. The meals are substantial and not astronomically priced, and the romantic touches such as a fireplace in the winter make the Starlite a must-do in Austin. Be sure to make reservations; otherwise you might end up waiting quite a while, especially on the weekends. -- Mike D'Alonzo

With such prices for so little food, I'd rather pay for some atmosphere with some elegance, such as the Four Seasons, than "pretending" that this shabby chic place is worth it.

The recent declaration that this venue offers the "best Sunday brunch" sent us there recently--the wait for even water was about 15 minutes and it all went downhill from there. The food looked lonely on the otherwise empty plates, was cooked improperly and was a meager serving for the price. The service was chocked full of attitude and lack of consideration. Never once were we asked how the food was. I will not be back and agree this place will not last.

Hours for dinner served have changed to Thursday, Fri. and Sat. The brunch was okay but not great. Old standards such as the blueberry pancakes were gooey and tasteless yet the crabcakes were fabulous. The mimosas at $7 seemed to be little more than two thimblefuls and had very little champagne. Dinner was much better than brunch but with 2 entrees, bottle of wine, one dessert and tip close to $80. However even though the portions were small, our dinner was very good and filling.

It's okay -- but after
going from Austin
restaurants to
Houston restaurants,
everything in Austin
tastes a notch lower
when I come back to
visit. Houston has
much better
restaurants.
