Colorful, zany and welcoming, Skyway Jack's is a South St. Pete favorite, founded in 1976 by a retired Navy man. Seating is available for 100 people in a cozy layout of plain tables and booths. Regulars run the gamut from families, senior citizens and hungover singles, to no-nonsense fishermen and cell-phone-yapping yuppies. A 6-foot "chicken" statue outside beckons hungry risers, along with a kooky arrangement of porcelain pigs, stuffed animals, clocks, weathervanes and signs bearing matter-of-fact witticisms, such as, "If you want breakfast in bed, sleep in the kitchen."

With mostly traditional breakfast and lunch items, there are a few standouts, including eggs Florentine, scrambled pork brains and Southern French toast with cream cheese, orange marmalade, pecans and honey-orange sauce. Service is fast and friendly. -- Julie Garisto
