Undoubtedly the most swinging breakfast spot in the city, the City Diner serves items like the meatloaf omelet, the chorizo scramble and the southsider are served throughout the day and evening. While not your usual greasy spoon, the City Diner (formerly South City Diner) does offer patrons cheap food in a '50s atmosphere. Waitresses lead guests to sparkly booths with squiggle tabletops, while images of Elvis, Marilyn and Betty Boop hover nearby. City Diner does the usual diner breakfasts, including fried egg sandwiches. Lunch and dinner are also standard, with salads, soups, sandwiches and, of course, meatloaf.
From there, the menu takes a turn with fresh fish, pasta and appetizers. One of the most interesting appetizers, the grilled polenta, is an Italian cornbread concoction. Less than a two bucks will get you a heaping plate of fries, and nothing on the menu is more than $10. The service is quick and friendly, and the eclectic clientele reflects the diner's South Grand location. The diner also has a soda fountain with a selection of shakes, in addition to offering alcoholic beverages. The eatery is popular with late-night diners looking to get a bite after midnight. The diner is open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday, so you can eat as late, or early, as you wish.

never again
I've gone here numerous times and it doesn't matter what time of day it is. The service is lousy, food usually cold and just try and get another cup of coffee. After my last visit over the weekend, I've had it. A simple order of toast couldn't be made. I've spent too much money here and have left disappointed every time.

We eat here several times a week. The deep fried french toast is over the top, and the bacon is the best I've ever eaten.
The staff is very friendly and the patrons come from every corner of St Louis. Great people watching.Amazing
After eating at City Diner one time, I was hooked. I am from out of town, but every time I come to visit my fiance', we have to go! The biscuits and gravy are divine. You also never know what kind of interesting characters you will see there! It's a great place to go after a show at The Pageant.
Don't believe the Hype
We don't have a frame of reference about how it was before 2005 but the Diner really seems to have it together. We eat out at least 4 times a week and the Diner is a regular haunt now. They even have a handle on the busy Sunday brunch. Yes, it has staff turnover but that happens when you try to give your customers the best. The bad reviews sound like disgruntled ex employees that did not make the cut. We will always love City Diner. Keep up the good work.
