If you're lucky enough to live near one of the several taquerias scattered about the city, chances are you will never go hungry or broke. For breakfast, get huevos rancheros, huevos a la Mexicana, chilaquiles or an order of migas. Tacos can be coupled with aguas frescas (orchata, tamarindo or limonada). Dinner plates include several old favorites: carne asada, flautas, gorditas, tripas, caldo de res and chicken or beef fajitas. For those craving something quick, order up the essential to any Jalisco in the city -- a torta. Tortas are basically sandwiches filled with pollo asada, pierna (pork leg), lengua (if you have to ask, you probably don't want to know) or ham on French loaf and served with tomatoes, sour cream and avacado. Taqueria Jalisco is small, but cozy, with a jukebox on one end that bumps out mostly Conjunto and Tejano tunes. Red booths and tables complement the colorful Mexican sarapes that hang over the windows as curtains. On weekend mornings, you'll find large groups of families and friends ordering up their share of the customary barbacoa tacos and menudo. If you're not patient enough to wait for a table, steer clear of here until mid-week. -- A. Onofre
