Everyone in Philadelphia has been to the Melrose Diner. It's something of a diner factory: two huge counters with 65 seats, large curving booths that follow the windows, and a long kitchen and service area with conveyor belts. Offering the usual variety of diner items (but less choice than you might expect), the Melrose food is adequate but surprisingly without distinction, except that the milkshakes are quite good. Bland turkey dinners feature sliced processed turkey, instant mashed potatoes, frozen green beans and tan gravy. Even the decor better resembles a Midwestern cafeteria than an eating institution in a city that prides itself on flavor. Better fare can be found elsewhere, but the waitresses smile and call you "hon," and the place is full of regulars happy to know exactly what they're getting. The Melrose is also a popular stop for late-night crowds sobering up on burgers and breakfast.

After a night of jacklighting streey vermi, ho patrols and crusieing there is nothing that beats one of their cheeseburger and hot apple pies. Just the thought of it gives me a warm feeling and yet makes me home sick. The people there were really friendly
