Refreshed under the new ownership, this neighborhood staple is sparkling clean and bustling. The Famous Deli has been established in 1923 and is now owned by Russ Cowan, whose family had been in the deli business since the 1900s. Gone are the Styrofoam soup bowls, power brunches and local-celeb cameos. The interior has been rehabbed with tiled floors and beautiful art deco lamps, the waitstaff are clad in black-and-white, prices are higher, and the reinvigorated menu boasts oversized, New York deli-style classics. A few things that had distinguished the deli in the past were kept -- such as the homemade chocolate chip cookies handed out at the end of the meal (they're smaller now) and the memorabilia wall. Portions are bigger than ever, so they're easily shared. Sandwiches like hot brisket, kosher salami and smoke ham come in two sizes, regular ($6-$12) and zaftig ($11-$15). The impressive smoked-fish part of the menu has 13 items (sable and sturgeon among them, $11-$16), all available as a platter or in a sandwich. Many sandwiches are named after the New York City locations where the Cowan family had owned the delis.

corned beef
They get you for a lot of cash but the mammoth sandwiches (corned beef)
are so good.Comments(0)|Add CommentVisit weekly
The reviews that say the place is filthy are unfair and inaccurate. The place looks like it is from another era and I like that very much! The classic Jewish deli food is very good. I visit weekly and yes, I occasionally receive less than stellar service. I have eaten there 50 times and still feel like a stranger. The over the top portions are perfect for sharing. Russ Cowan, the owner, is very hands on and if you have a complaint, ask for him. He also accepts compliments for the best pastrami in the city.

food is very good, generous portions. service is hit and miss, depending on who your server is.
A must for big appetites!
A fabulous breakfast place...corned beef omelettes, french toast,
potato latkes...a fabulous lunch place...I'm getting hungry just thinking
about it...their tuna sandwich on rye is one of our favorites along with
fabulous food you will be served by some of the nicest wait staff
around.
