Nestled among the tony boutiques of Park Avenue, this unpretentious restaurant and ice cream parlor has been attracting loyal patrons with creative menu items for more than a decade. If you plan on dining here in the morning hours, expect large crowds and a bit of a wait, especially on the weekends, as breakfasts here are all the rage and always exotic. The Hawaiian pancakes with freshly shredded coconut, macadamia nuts and crushed pineapple (pictured), crabby eggs (scrambled eggs, crab, dill and cream cheese) and the ham, brie and apple omelet are just some of the more popular items on its breakfast menu.

Its vast selection of sandwiches, salads and burgers keep the lunch crowds strong (even the garden burger's good) while the dinner menu features an eclectic array of French provincial and Italian-influenced items. The petite merlot filet (grilled filet mignon with a merlot mushroom sauce, garlic mashed potatoes and French green beans) comes at a very reasonable price while the chicken Briarpatch (breast of chicken, mushrooms and artichokes served on angel hair pasta in a light cream sauce) is a house favorite. The chocolate layer cake and peanut butter mousse pie are nothing short of superdelicious, but if you want to take a cake home, it'll cost you. The ice cream is made fresh and changes daily. You won't have a better pistachio ice cream or Mandarin orange yogurt anywhere in the city.

  • can't believe they're #5

I just can't believe they actually made it to #5. It used to be the best place for breakfast, but now it's not worth the trip. It takes forever to get served and the food has really gone downhill. Sad, but true.

  • HORRIBLE FOOD, SERVICE, AND OWNER!

I ate at this restaurant a couple of weeks ago and had absolutely horrible service. Our server, Colin, overcharged me for my food, did not prepare it the way I had asked and didn't refill our drinks. I had to ASK him to refill our drinks. Plus the fish was very dry. Upon calling the restaurant, the manager, Josh, said that he would refund my money that day, and he apologized. I called back 2 weeks later and he had told me I was wrong! I then asked to speak with the owner Celeste Pertz. She verbally harassed and yelled at me on the phone then offered me a gift certificate! HA HA! Why would someone want to eat at a restaurant after this?? FOOD LOVER BEWARE!!!!! BAD SERVICE, BAD FOOD, BAD MANAGEMENT AND OWNERS!!!!

  • No speed to this feed....

    Review rating : 4out of 5   Maggie108 - 07/25/2008

How right the diner was who said, "if you can ever get the food..." They're often unbelievably slow, but most of the fare is worth a wait. Be sure you ask for everything you need--jelly butter, more coffee, silverware--when you see your waitstaff because he/she may not be back!

I love the omlets, but the benedicts are not as impressive. The bacon stays with you way way too long--perhaps not a quality product or fresh enough. Wheat toast looks more like colored white bread than wheat.

The best part of the Briarpatch is the outside seating. Its location on the east side of Park Ave means that it doesn't get morning sun and thus stays decently cool for breakfast. The tables are right on the sidewalk, and as a diner, you become part of the Winter Park see and be seen scene. Dogs are allowed outside and this keeps things interesting.

One note--don't order the meat lover's omlet--it's about five pounds of heart attack on a plate. Nobody can eat even half and it's a waste unless you order it to feed a family of four.

  • Food Poisoning

For a week after eating here, I was as sick as a dog. Watched the cooks go from kitchen to bathroom and back in same space. Health Dept said more than one in my party had to be ill...I dined alone!
