City's Best

1418 Magazine St
New Orleans, LA 70130

Only in New Orleans would one of the premier juice bars offer a Montana Plate featuring bacon, ham, AND sausage, or be renowned for a biscuit-sausage-gravy plate. However, perhaps that's the very reason why locals of all gastronomic faiths converge here for, among other things, one of the most celebrated Sunday brunches in the city. The atmosphere is naturally sensualist, with plant life and orally fixated artwork framing the small but adequate dining area, and local musicians on repeat in the background. A local favorite, the Muffuletta, is a specialty here (Italian bread stuffed with ham, cheese, salami, and olive salad), while Surrey's smoked turkey breast, huevos rancheros, and avocado po-boys are also beloved by natives.

Of course, there's plenty of freshly-squeezed juices of all kinds, fresher than anything else you can get in town, not to mention cappuccino, fresh-roasted coffee, and fabulous Abita Root Beer on tap. Better still, Surrey's has other amenities that will appeal to any diet; namely, a friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices. -- Rob Fontenot, Jr.

  • Great Place

I love Surrey's. I bring all guests here for breakfast especially on Sundays. Service has always been great for me. I agree, the Bananas Foster French Toast is wonderful as is the crab sandwich. I suggest split those two with someone and have some of each. The ices coffee is delicious also and the specials are always a treat. A local who loves this place for breakfast.

  • Awesome Food

The food is great but the service is terrible. I worked in New Orleans for several months and finally quit going to Mother's because of the service. My wife and I were there one morning and they were short help and the owner or manager wouldn't get behind the counter and take ours and several others money. The ladies had to stop what they were doing to take the money.

My sister first took me to Surrey's four years ago before I moved out of town. Now, every time I come home for a visit, I have to go to Surrey's for their Banana's Foster French Toast. I'm serious, when I say, "You can't vote in this poll until you've tried the Banana's Foster Fench Toast."

This place has a funky neighborhood vibe. The menu is mostly breakfast but adequate lunch selections. The specials are a real treat and change regularly. Try the Heirloom Tomato omlet and watermelon juice.
