Deep in the ramshackle heart of the Bywater District is this crisp, slightly countrified diner, serving up the best brunch in town. You'll find locals at the handful of square tables, which are draped in stars-and-moons cloths. Breakfast is served daily and features southern staples with some imaginative twists -- try some praline-crushed bacon with your grits and eggs. The breakfast po'boy is also a favorite. Lunch brings more specialty sandwiches and soul food, including killer gumbo. Just to be safe, consider saving room for dessert; owner/chef Heidi is married to one of Emeril Lagasse's pastry chefs. Be sure to bring cash, as credit cards are not accepted, and heed the "No cell phones" sign over the breakfast counter -- they mean business! There may be a wait for weekend brunch. -- Stella Hebert

If you can't eat at Magnolia Cafe, this is the best food and atmosphere you can look for.

A great local place with great menu items that you can't get anywhere else. I walked here from the French Quarter and it was definately worth the long walk. I needed the long walk back to work off the breakfast po'boy!

The restaurant could be said to have charm, but sanitation is seriously lacking. Who can enjoy a meal when they're hoping nothing nasty got into the food?

Very good. The choices are excellent. The prices are reasonable. The service is exactly correct.
I will go back on my next visit. I recommend it to other Orleanians in exile in Texas.

Actually, Heidi, Greg, et al. deserve 5 stars for flavor, friendliness, and certainly for portions. But nobody would believe that. Eating is believing.
