Mom's Diner pays homage to the '50s diners of yore, yet keeps the garish art-deco touches to a minimum. In fact, at this Orange Village spot there are even a few homey wooden accents to balance out the blinding stainless steel. The menu features diner favorites, but with the added bonus of having a few staple items prepared at Moxie, the highly rated, uberchic East Side restaurant also owned by the proprietor's of Mom's. The main attraction, however, is breakfast. There's Mom's Really Big Breakfast, which features three eggs, three pancakes, two sausages and two strips of bacon. Do the math -- it's a really big breakfast. Lunch treats include something from Pop -- that's right, Dad's Chili is lumberjack-hearty and topped with cheese and sour cream. Or go the classic comfort route with a meatloaf sandwich topped generously with gravy. Dinners include pleasant surprises like Jail Island salmon, which is seared. For dessert, a hot-fudge sundae with homemade ice cream provides a nice coda to a nostalgic dining experience.

Mom's has new owners and they've got it right. The Kusner's, a hands on H & W team, are serving food "Just like Mom's".

Breakfasts are fresh and tastey, not to mention filling. Lunch is just as good.

  • There's nothing like Mom's cooking.

Which is why this place fails miserably. Nothing my husband, my daughter or myself had for dinner tasted, or was prepared, anything close to Mom's cooking. For starters, the fries, onion rings and fried mushrooms are of the foodservice variety: frozen then heated. Moxie makes great fries at their Beachwood restaurant. Perhaps they could send some over to Mom's diner.Onion rings were the same. Fried mushrooms? Also foodservice, frozen, not even fresh mushrooms, but canned. If a diner can't get these basics right, chances are what's to follow will miss the mark as well. Well, at least you could say Mom's diner was consistent. The Meditarranean salad I had was prepared with the lowest-quality feta cheese, canned olives and a salad dressing that tasted like Mom had poured it from the bottle herself. And if a diner claiming home-made quality was shooting blanks thus far, the Vanilla milkshake we ordered sealed the deal. About as thick as a glass of milk and almost as thin tastewise, wow.
Diner to me says homemade,or at least tastes that way. That is why this restaurant was so disappointing. Add that to the fact that it is owned by the people who bring us great dining experiences at Moxie. We came in expecting the quality and care in food quality, taste and preparation to match up to Moxie's high standards. Not even what was on the menu had any originality. In a town that is becoming dominated by chain restaurants, we really wanted this one to be good. Unfortunately it wasn't. Bottom line: If your Mom's idea of home-cooking was opening cans, defrosting and microwaving, you're gonna feel right at home.

Just a note to all -- the hours of operation listed on this site are incorrect for Mom's Diner. Correct hours are as follows...
    Mon-Thurs: 6am - 9pm
    Friday: 6am - 11pm
    Saturday: 7am - 11pm
    Sunday: 7am - 9pm
While these hours are always subject to change, they are accurate as of 9/15/04. Hope this helps! Take it from an employee...it's WELL worth a visit to Mom's for some terrific (and completely health-conscious) cooking!
