What every suburb needs is a great hangout that brews its own beer, and now New Brighton has Barley John's. Transforming an old A&W into a dark wood and stained glass reinvention of an English pub has been a personal process for the owners, who custom made the gorgeous maple bar. Their attention to detail and pride in ownership thankfully extends to the four beers they brew on premises and the lovely collection of Scottish whisky they have amassed. They close on Sundays so they can give their full attention to brewing their beer, which makes Monday everyone's favorite day to sample the fresh batch. The menu is comfortable with your usual pub fare-burgers, chicken sandwiches, and a pizza or two. But they do run specials every day and the meatloaf is worth a try.

I love the old 8 Porter but a true beer Connoisseur will go bonkers over the Dark Knight or Rosie's. Both smell like a good Scotch, taste like a very strong dark beer and then, as they warm up, taste more like a deep red wine. They push the limits of what is a beer.

The food is mostly different and excellent. My favorites are any of the appetizers or pizzas.

Service can be slow/lousy but if you're not in a hurry, the wait is well worth it.

The Old 8 Porter is great. The food is a cut above average bar fair. Nothing is better than a pizza and beer.
