Take in the essence of the historic Barbary, and imagine sipping a beer beside literary pals Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac at "San Francisco's Original Brewpub." The San Francisco Brewing Company sits along the North Beach/Chinatown/Financial District intersection and provides laid-back locals, happy-hour fans and pre-partying clubbers with freshly-made unpasteurized and unfiltered beer, daily. Originally 1907's Andromeda Saloon, the pub's old-fashioned feel is not merely a facade with its rich, slick mahogany bar and 1916 Pukka Walla fan of brass and palm fronds spinning softly above. Knowledgeable bartenders can help decipher a menu of locally-inspired brews from the Emperor Norton Lager and Oofty Goofty Barleywine to the Alcatraz Stout Ale. Lunch and dinner are also served with typical brewpub fare, including fish and chips, burgers, salads, quesadillas, calamari, and even gumbo. Live jazz is featured (generally Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays), and darts, chess, backgammon and dice cups are also available. True beer aficionados should call ahead to book a free tour of the brewing facility.

Nice Bar, Excellent Beer
Although I really enjoyed hanging out at the bar, what really hooked me was the beer, which is brewed in house. My favorite was the Albatross Lager, which was deep and tasty for such a light beer. The Hugh Hefnerweizen came in a close second and had a flavour as sexy as its name. If you're in it for the beer this is the place.

A great place to start your bar hopping adventure. This place is great, excellent selection of beers crafted in house. You can really feel the history here, I kept waiting for Doc Holiday to step through the doors.
