Who would have thought that the ultimate place in town to quench a beery thirst would be located in the hot plains of Kearny Mesa, among the Korean shops and the occasional strip joint? Yet it's a sweet, foamy truth. O'Brien's has topped Best Beer selection lists for years and years, and as long as the owners persevere in their efforts to bring San Diego the most obscure, diverse microbrews on the planet, the bar will continue to reign at the top.
O'Brien's is cozy and close-quartered, although there is quite a bit of room to expand the party onto the patio. It's been dubbed "the hoppiest place on earth," and the pun stands true in both directions. No crowd is more jovial than that at O'Brien's; in addition, the majority of the bar's beers are heavily hopped, which hardcore beer drinkers seem to appreciate, although novices looking for an easy swallow might be disappointed. The place also offers a noteworthy variety of pub food. Most regulars swear by the garlic fries, smothered in an avalanche of stinking rose. Just remember: You'll be tasting them for days afterward.

Comments(0)|Add Commentawesome little soccer & beer bar
The only time you'll find baseball on their TV's is when there's no soccer on. If you want Champions League or EPL, this is the place to go. No cover, either. Tom (who is rumored to be a Yale grad), is the ultimate beer nerd. He uses his connections in the beer community to get beers that you literally can't get anywhere else. The specials are usually pretty tasty; my only complaint is that their pre-packaged burger patties are lacking in quality.
As for the racism comment - that's whack. I bring my 4'10" asian girlfriend in there all the time and I've never encountered any negativity. Most of the time, Tom is too busy to chat anyway.Total Lies
The below review by "milquetoastyb" contains nothing but lies about me, the owner of O'Brien's. I have never made racist remarks in the pub and why this person wants to slander me and the pub I do not know. This is a clear case of someone trying to flame us on the internet. This happens. You 86 people, they get mad and then they think they will try to get even.
Please stop by the pub for a beer and judge for yourself. Our correct website is WWW.OBRIENSPUB.NET and we are open from Noon to 6 pm on Sundays, unlike the incorrect information that AOL has posted. If anyone reading this can change that, please do so.Never Said That
I am the owner of O'Brien's and I never said what the woman in the review from 4-27-07 claims I said. I would never insult people by their height. I am 6'3" and very aware of how much taller I am than most people. We have many customers named Tom and we have many Asian customers - we are after all on Convoy street. So please read the other reviews and do not believe that anyone at O'Brien's is in any way racist. Thanks, Tom Nickel
My ears!
I liked the food and the beer selection but was subjected to some horrifying racist remarks made by "Tom" (supposedly the owner). So if you are someone who might fit into the category of "f-ing 5'2'' Asian guys and their 4'9'' girlfriends" know that you probablyy won't feel welcome at this establishment.
