In a sea of Irish Pubs -- Portland's specialty it seems -- Horse Brass is a nice change of pace. Although it's a British pub (which some consider an Irish nemesis), it's easy to slip into this authentic-looking pub. Sure you can get a properly poured Guinness from a wooden tap just like those in Ireland, but that's where the similarities end. The photographs, polished horse brass medallions and signs that cover the interior scream England. If you're not yet induced to start singing ''God Save the Queen,'' order some kidney pie. And while Horse Brass Pub may be into promoting its heritage, it does think globally in the beer department. You can't go wrong with a selection of 40 beers from around the world and a batch of single-malt whiskeys.

i've been there 3 times and all 3 times horrible service, even for a shitty bar in portland horrible service...i've been to many a bar and it most certainly takes the cake on poor service. Two out of the three times i went the server also overtipped herself. The one time when no one attempted to steal from my visa i had a 64-70 year old lady as my server who thought everyone in the bar on a friday night was too loud...lol but i kept going back for the fish and chips they are that good.... btw i was a bartender and server for 4 years so don't give me the bad day bs, if you steal on visas you should find a land bridge and jump off it.

  • A bit of Old England

I have lived in England, and the Horse Brass is an authentic English pub. If the service isn't always to your liking, it's still authentic to most English pubs. The food is great, the beer selection is the best, and the atmosphere is great. It's been my local for 30 years.

I know my way around the Irish pubs in town, too. It's just the American bars I avoid ...

I've really enjoyed the Horsebrass in the past, but my last experience might just be that: the last. Service was horrible. The server spent half her time standing around and the other half ignoring my attempts to get her attention, snapping at me or making faces.

Service is service and can be touch and go - we all have bad days right? Well, I checked my credit card statement online tonight. Thank goodness I still had my receipt because it ends up the server "tipped" herself an extra $4.00 at my expense - money I did not authorize.

Go at your own risk, but if you do - take cash.

Although I would have loved to sample the fares of this awesome looking pub. When looking at the website thought it would be great, so my husband and daughter drove all the way down there to find out that they do not admit minors. We were very disappointed that it was not on the website.

I've never been to England but I hear this is as close as you'll get to an Ol' English Pub. The food is excellent ( fish & chips, bnagers & mash, Scotch eggs) and the beer selection is divine. Plus, you get to got to Pub Quiz at 7:30 on the second Wednesday of each month- it's a stimulating night of trivia, physical challenges and good old fashioned fun.
