Chain restaurants rarely distinguish themselves as anything special. Thankfully, on its journey crisscrossing the country from Washington to Florida and Ohio to Hawaii, Gordon Biersch has picked up a little something at each location, making the menu anything but boring. The BLTA fleshes out the usual BLT fare with thick slices of avocado. The fries, golden brown and addictive, are shrouded in garlic so strong and sweet that if one person at the table eats them, everyone else had better have at least one. The rotating selection of microbrews means not just fresh beer, but an opportunity to sample both unusual and seasonal brews. There are always five micro brewed options, in addition to mainstream brands on tap and in bottles.

Insider tip for accessing the Tempe location: The address might be on Mill Avenue, but the entrance is actually on Fifth Street. Watch for the banners hung from the side of the building. Their second floor location gives guests a birds-eye view of Mill Avenue and all the entertainment that provides day and night. Multiple TVs ensure no sporting event goes unwatched.
