City's Best

1509 Mifflin St
Philadelphia, PA 19145

The SPTR promises an 'outrageous beer selection' in its print ads, and it sure delivers one of the best and varied beer selections in the city. There are many rotating microbrews on tap, ales, and dozens of bottled imports, from the low-end to some seriously obscure, pricey ones. You will find your favorite Belgian and English brews, but the local breweries are also well represented (Yards, Sly Fox, Flying Fish, Dogfish Head). The weekend special, Yards IPA, is $3. The Tap Room is also friendly and civilized, with a solid jukebox and a famously accommodating staff. The vibe is more Old City than South Philly, in a good, non-hip way: The place is well lit thanks to the huge windows, there are wooden booths, high-top tables, an outdoor seating, the exposed brick wall behind the bar, and Temple U. paraphernalia here and there. The SPTR sure loves Temple U. on Tuesdays -- $1 would get you a mug of lager if you show a Temple ID. Tuesday is a Quizzo night as well. The food ($5-$8) is generously doled out, and it's a notch up from the typical bar food. For instance, there are hummus and a Moroccan spiced braised lamb sandwich.

I've dined on the new menu twice and both times have been disappointed. I still don't get why on earth you would serve all sandwiches on english muffins. English muffins!? The SPTR is surrounded if not mobbed by great classic south philly italian bakeries that deliver fresh crusty bread every morning and they decide to serve your sandwiches on english muffins!? They would serve better as coasters or mini dog frisbees. The battered zucchini are way too big and sloppily done, looking more like big moon rocks. The frito pie is served in its own bag in an attempt to be creative. The cheese on the vegetarian chili was clumped together and not melted nearly enough. I described the new menu to my dining partner as trailer park gourmet. The dishes are inspired but the execution is heavy handed and lacks attention to detail. If i go to the SPTR again it will be for the beer and nothing else.
