A lot of folks drive plumb across the Valley to eat Joe's famous barbecue. Winner of numerous "Best of Phoenix" awards, it's a favorite for after-church crowds on Sundays. You can tell by the tractor parked in the dining room of the 1929-era brick building that this is a down-home type of place. It's main features are a friendly family atmosphere and gigantic, mouth-watering barbecue sandwiches at rock-bottom prices. Joe's Jumbo Sandwich has more than a third of a pound of brisket, pulled pork, pit ham, hot links, chicken or turkey. Side dishes include potato salad, pit beans, sweet corn and macaroni and cheese. Kids get a sandwich and big cookie for around $3 -- about what you'd pay for the cookie alone in many places. Platters of pork ribs also draw raves. This is real barbecue, not the typical roast beef slathered in sauce that often passes for barbecue. The tender, slow-cooked meat is smoked over pecan wood, giving it a sweet, tangy taste. A special feature is homemade root beer and red cream soda.

  • Joe's......I'll be back.

This year I've been to Mesa twice on business. A co-worker turned me on to Joe's, and am I ever so grateful! I've been there four times in two weeks, and I'll always stop there when I get back to the area. Gilbert reminds me of the movie "Murphy's Romance". Having grown up on a Midwest farm, the restored John Deere Model A 2 cylinder tractor strikes a nerve. Joe's brisket is right up with there with the best. His mac & chese, beans and lemon cake are the best. Joe's isn't one of the trendy places, but it is the best and friendliest, down home restaurant I've been in.

Maybe they are hard up? The food was ok?? But not the best bbq in the valley?? Not bad food but not the best I agree descent food but maybe they should try and enter a bbq contest or 2?? For those of us who have had the privelege of eating at a bbq contest would agree the food is mediocre and servise was descent!! Find a real BBQ contestant and learn!!

THE CAFETERIA STYLE SERVICE IS OUT DATED AND SERVICE IS POOR AT THE BEST. FOOD IS OK BUT NOT AS GOOD AS FAMOUS DAVES, DINING AREA IS IN NEED OF HELP AND STAFF NEEDS TO BE TRAINED TO TAKE CARE OF CUSTOMERS BETTER.
LOCATION IS OK BUT OUT OF THE WAY AND PARKING IS HARD TO GET.
