In a town with barbecue joints on every corner, Hayward Spears has managed to elevate his family business to a fine dining establishment. Hayward's Johnson County location is popular with lunchtime crowds who enjoy the fast service, upscale atmosphere and tasty takeout. The food is delicious and served up in huge portions. The secret to Hayward's success is the use of a smoke pit, which gives the meats a distinctive and delightful flavor. If you notice a special authenticity to the flavor, there's a reason for that. Spears learned the technique for smoking meat in his child hometown of Hope, Ark., where his father experimented with woods and meats in the smokehouse like a scientist. Spears took on that same passion and practiced on family and friends for years before he finally let the public in on it. Many other barbecue places in the area have tried to clone the taste, but fall short of the real thing. Hayward's is a one-of-a-kind original. -- Deidre Berry

This place used to be great! Now, I'd swear that they must use a freakin' microwave. There was a time when you'd have to wait to be seated - not anymore. Go somewhere else.

  • Tough chew, poor service

After a long day at work, my co-worker and I decided to head to Hayward's for some KC BBQ. There was one waitress managing at least 7 tables and it took our food an hour to come out. The meat was dry and overcooked. A table of 15 teenagers who were sat after us got their food and were out the door before we were delivered the check. I do not recommend this place for anyone.

Met some friends there on Saturday evening,
the one good thing I have to say: I can't say they skimp on food portion, we had combo for 2 and was a HUGE PLATTER of meat.

15 years in the food business and I know what to look for and what to overlook. I can overlook overworked waitstaff if managment is pitching in. They didn't. There were plenty of folks around the hostess table, but the poor waitress had the dining room to herself, even having to tend bar! The place filled up then the Lacross team showed up!

    1. Burnt ends were burnt yesterday or the day before. Old mixed with new and mostly tasted tired.
    2. Too much grease on plate. Sliced brisket again seemed like yesterday's
    3. Did I mention the service? could have died of thirst!

Place is cruising on it's past glory and will be a just a memory in a few months. Remember, If Memories are all I have, I'd rather drive a truck!

ps, the sauce was ok, but Rosedale's is just as good.
Try Smokehouse on North Oak Trafficway. That's my burnt end standard!

Hayward's used to be a place we would take a LARGE group of out-of-town employees to because it was so good. While I haven't lived here in more than 10 years, I got to town and sought out the closest bbq and remembered its "reputation" at my former company. The regular beef brisket sandwich, while had a lot of meat, left a lot to be desired in regards to the TRADITIONAL KC BBQ smoked flavor. It was almost as tasteless as the crap they call BBQ in California! The beans were practically regular, out-of-the-can style. The best part is the potato salad. So sad to see a KC local favorite has gone downhill, IMHO.
