The Luling City Market, just inside the 610 Loop near the Galleria, was established in 1981, but when you first see the tin-roofed porch and hitching-post facade, you might think it dates back to 1881. The restaurant seems more like a stop for a dusty stagecoach than the sleek cars and double-barreled trucks parked out front. The interior is just as rustic, decorated in traditional Texas style, and the staff greets you like an old friend. Open every day of the week, The Luling City Market slow cooks its meats and birds over Post Oak wood in old-fashioned pits (no gas is used), and makes the salads, beans and desserts from scratch. The sauce is thick and spicy, and so popular, they ship it all over the country. Made from a 60-year-old Texas recipe, it's a mouth-watering blend of smoky sweet and peppered spice (available in the restaurant for about $2.50 a pint). Lunch and dinner plates of brisket, ribs, chicken, turkey, and sausage range from $6.10 to $8.25 and include two sides. Turkey and beef sandwiches cost $3.60. Top it all off with a slice of pecan pie or a Texas-sized brownie. Customers bypass grocers to buy pit meats and plump link sausages here, which are made from fresh lean beef and savory spices, and packaged in any amount you wish, hot or cold (about $2 a link). Catering and delivery is available. -- Lyn Foster

Comments(0)|Add CommentCertainly better than Goode C. BBQ
Meats are flavorful, sides average. And for God's sake, don't advertise a dinner or lunch "plate" when it is served on a plastic tray with a piece of paper put on top. Haven't they heard of a real PLATE? If you are gonna eat BBQ in Houston, this is the best place I've found yet. Do yourself a favor though, take a plate from home with you to eat it on (even if it is Chinet!)
YUM!
My favorite and has been since my husband took me for the first time back in the 80's. Their sausage is unbelievable. It is something everyone must experience.
