Located near the Crescent Court in Dallas, Sammy's doesn't look like the place to go for barbecue, but inside the hickory-smoked aroma is thick. Lodged in an old grocery store building, Sammy's combines a warm and well-lit environment with an up-scale location and barbecue that is decidedly Texan. The menu lists all the basics, like tender beef brisket and hearty pork ribs, but also offers a few choices you might not expect, such as the baked potato casserole, Caesar salad and several homestyle vegetable dishes. Sammy's is family owned and open only for lunch, so arrive early and expect a crowd. If it's not too hot, have lunch on the shaded terrace. -- Kimberly Williams

As a native Texan, I can attest that this is some of the best barbeque in town. It reminds me of growing up in East Texas and the really down home barbeque we had there. Don't forget that you can get take out from Sammy's---I especially like the squash cassarole and baked potatoe cassarole for casual dinner parties at home. Sammy's is only open for lunch---but does open up for private parties at night.

All those who rate this place above one star are not native Texans or have never tasted real wood (hickory or mesquite)smoked meat. The BBQ beef tasted like plain chuck roast cooked in an oven. The chicken was diced up white meat. The only saving grace was the decent sauce that added some flavor. For a city like Dallas that likes to think it's thee Texas town this is a poor excuse for BBQ joint.

Try the beef sausage when its available, mildly spicy with distinct flavor, Also, the chicken breast. I don't know how they keep it so moist and it's skinless!

Food was terrific, but the lines have been long - perhaps there would be a way to help eliminate this problem
