Dimly lit and wood-paneled, Old Hickory House Restaurant offers the ideal barbecue atmosphere -- right down to lamps that look like miniature covered wagons. Specializing in a sweetly spiced, tomato-based sauce, Old Hickory House serves up a Western North Carolina style barbecue menu that should have you licking your sauce-covered fingers throughout your meal. You can have your slathered pork, chicken or beef served on a bun sloppy-Joe style, or sliced/chopped on a plate. Either way, have plenty of napkins handy. Other popular choices include the ribs platter and Brunswick stew. The hearty mix of chicken, pork, beef, tomato, corn, spices and sauce is perfect for dipping your bread into. Substantial side dishes include baked beans, corn bread, coleslaw, corn on the cob and mashed potatoes. You can also crunch on some tart homemade pickles. Wash down your meal with some sweet Southern tea.

Southern california visitor to Charlotte, everyone told me to try some good BBQ. I asked around, and three people recommended this place, but NONE could remember the name. I found it, and it was amazing. I had the pork ribs & beef combo, with some of the brunswick stew, beans and fries.

Loved every bite. More than I could eat for dinner, for under $20. Very good service too.

If you want the absolute best real pit cooked BBQ this place is a must. I have tried BBQ joints in eastern NC, Western NC, Texas, Memphis, Kansas, Florida, SC, CA, and others and this place has the best! Family owned and operated for generations, the service and quality are consistantly superb. Try the chopped pork sandwhich with slaw, the bbq beans, the brunswick stew and sweet tea for a gut busting, A1 BBQ experience! See you there for lunch this afternoon!!!
