Purveyors of smoked brisket to conventioneers, singers and Dubya.
The Iron Works barbecue's home is in the historic Weigl Iron Works building, which was designated as an historical monument in 1982. Since 1978, it has been used to serve the legendary official Texas barbecue. The Iron Works is visited each year by thousands of dignitaries, celebrities, officials and visitors from all over the USA, in addition to local fans. In Short
Housed in the former workshop of ironsmith Fortunat Weigl, this downtown eatery feels more like the camphouse of a Hill Country deer lease, with its pot-bellied stoves and screened porch. The dark-paneled walls bear autographed photos and testimonial letters from patrons such as George W. Bush, Bob Dylan and Martin Sheen. The chopped beef sandwich is a lunchtime standard. Sampler plates feature sweet brisket, sausage and beef ribs. Non-conformists visit the all-you-can eat salad bar.
Insider Tips
from CitySearch

Know Before You Go
Iron Works is next door to the Austin Convention Center. Beware: It can get crowded at noontime.

The Extras
Barbecue is good by the plate, great by the pound. Brisket sells for $10.60 a pound, beef ribs for $5.90, sausage for $6.65. Call for the complete listing. Catering is also available.

Where to Sit
If the interior seems too dark, try the open-air pavilion upstairs. Feels like a treehouse, albeit one with iron bars.

  • One of Better BBQ Places in Town

    Review rating : 5out of 5   TxTopper - 02/18/2009

My favorite BBQ joint is about 30 miles south of town, and I only eat BBQ at three places in the city limits, and this is one of them. I really like the seasoning that they use on all of the meats. It is one of the few places that serves a really good beef rib. BBQ is always hit or miss, even at the best places, so there will sometimes be a dry piece of brisket or a rib without much meat. But Iron Works is usually reliably good.

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

It is kinda upsetting when you look at these ratings and see people who say that this food is okay. This place is amazing. The food is great and the atmosphere is wonderful. It is nice to know that there are still restaurants around that are affordable and have an enjoyable environment. I would honestly have to say that my favorite part about the Iron Works is the old fashion set up. I love that there is not a fountain drink machine, there are tins of old fashioned soda bottles for you to choose from. Though if you ask my husband his favorite he cant pride his self away from the ribs. He is in love with them. So, in conclusion this restaurant is excellent and I will always be a life time consumer.

There is no need to say this BBQ is finger licking good. Everytime we eat at Iron works we are reminded of the fact that this BBQ is second to none. If God created earth, he created the receipe for Iron Works BBQ. If this BBQ doesn't have a place in heaven....some of us may have to return to earth to enjoy the goodness so vote Iron Works is the best in the world not just he west!
