Basking in the laid-back attitude of its Wrigleyville surroundings, Guthries is a model neighborhood bar, the kind of place you might expect to find Norman Rockwell kicking back after a hard day in the studio. This establishment takes pride in doing the little things well: free pretzels and mustard dip, a friendly wait staff, and a cozy, accommodating atmosphere. Ambiance aside, there is really only one reason why Guthries is a legend in Lakeview: board games. From Monopoly to Chutes and Ladders, Guthries offers free board games for every taste and level of sobriety. The games provide a welcome distraction from the cold, cruel world outside the bar. Get there early, however, as Guthries fills quickly on the weekends and table seating is limited.
