One of the first Japanese restaurants to offer sushi in New Orleans, Kyoto remains the favorite for a large contingent of loyal Uptown eaters. While the sushi basics are all represented, the chef is best known for garnishing rolls and sashimi with complex sauces; perhaps the most talked-about dish involves raw tuna topped with a sort of Asian guacamole. There's also whitefish carpaccio with basil oil, a roll featuring beef and asparagus, another one with fried soft-shell crab, and comforting noodle soups you can imagine Japanese mothers serving their sick children.
The space is super-casual and utterly unpretentious, though it's a hotbed for young daters and couples splurging on multi-course dinners. The 12-seat bar is especially busy at lunch, but don't be shy about asking the busy chefs about the day's specials. This isn't the most stylish sushi restaurant in town, but the products and preparations compete with the best. -- Sara Roahen
