Kansas City's Westport district -- a midtown melange of specialty shops, bars and restaurants -- includes a Thai restaurant in its cosmopolitan palette. The atmosphere and menu of the Thai Place has more flair than its generic name might suggest. The dining room's wide windows take advantage of the eatery's corner location. Low-key lighting, Far Eastern flower arrangements and white tablecloths set a mood of understated elegance, leaving all the fanfare to the food.

Owner Ann Liberda pays homage to her native cuisine's reputation for piquancy, while putting an emphasis on freshness. Soft spring rolls and soups such as thom yum and galanga highlight the tradition of blending an array of flavors. As for entrees, shrimp, scallops and sea bass are all flown in daily and served up in sundry combinations of curries and sauces. Desserts include flavor grace notes such as baked coconut custard and exotic ice cream featuring mango, jackfruit and other tropical flavors. -- Tony Gardner

I think Thai food is so much better then regular chinese, But I think Thai place has made Thai a little too homogenized and boring with their different locals. I was at the 87th street one many years ago with friends. The soup was good and the entrees were good. But since they expanded to different locations I have not been there again and don't plan to eat in any of there places. My preference is not to eat in ethnic places that are franchises or more then one of the same. I mean how do you know which if any of them are really good? But the entree list and the soups are really not all that spectacular compared to ones that I have had in different parts of the country, KC thai or Ming Tsai's restaurant in Mass.
