Since first appearing on the scene, Mikado has become a darling of the local sushi enthusiast community (yes, there is such a thing), having carved itself a niche among the top-ranked purveyors of Japanese cuisine in Travis County. Its also something of a bad boy among the genre both preparation and presentation is quite profoundly untraditional with regards to most every barometer of what the elderly Tokyo crowd would find acceptable. The menu betrays a marked emphasis on the grilled over the raw, and such things as quail addled with zuzu peppercorn may be had. Of course, youll also find ancient favorites like seaweed salad, raw oysters, and the obligatory mile-long list of sushi rolls. And on a cold day, its tough to beat a large iron pot filled with sake-steamed mussels as an aide to clear up the sinuses. The dessert selection is a bit sparing, but sponge cake soaked in rum and served with orange custard and raspberry puree makes up for the absence of other sweets. -- Barrett Brown
